Based on observations, most young ladies have transcended from the conventional length of artificial fingernails, acrylic nails or nail extension as the case may be. They now opt for a very long claw-like fake fingernails.

It’s more like a trend because i see a plethora of ladies rocking various designs and beautiful colors of these said artificial fingernails. Celebrities are not left out in this trend(i think they actually influenced it).

In different occasions, i have seen girls struggling to use cutleries while eating. Enjoying our local dishes like ‘swallow’ is a herculean task, because of their long nails and this triggers my inquisition….how do they cope with home chores like laundry, bathing, cooking, washing dishes or even zip up dresses. What of personal hygiene? , Do those nails hide dirts ?

In all sincerity, some of the colorful ones are really beautiful, i admire when i see one but this trend is quite interesting. I’m trying so hard not to be judgemental.

There are things you need to know about these artificial nails.
Let’s begin with the different types of artificial fingernails:

Acrylic Nails
Nail technicians mix a liquid with a powder and brush the mixture onto the nails. They usually cover the entire nail.

Gel Nails
Gels used for these nails have a similar consistency to nail polish.
They are brushed onto your nails, nail tips, or nail appliqués to extend length. After your nail technician applies each coat, you must put your nails under ultraviolet (UV) light for up to two minutes to “cure” or harden the product.

Silk Nails
These fabric wraps are glued in place to strengthen weak nails or help a cracked nail grow out. Some wraps are made of silk, but others are made of linen, paper, or fiberglass.
Your nail technician will fit the material to your nail’s shape, hold it in place, then brush on glue.

Each type of these nails costs quite a sum to fix, from a minimum of N15,000 to N50,000.
There are press-on nails too; They’re artificial fingernails made of acrylic resin, gel or ABS plastic and painted with nail polish. press-on nails are similar to those other nails, but they cover the whole nail bed. The application is a simple process with glue or adhesive tab.
